The biggest problem as far as teaching Kayla is that she is both MR and autistic. So not only is trying to get her engaged to learn anything a problem, it also takes her so much longer to learn. It's frustrating.

I've found Steps To Independence (Baker & Brightman) very helpful in teaching Kayla daily living skills. It's pretty much an ABA approach to things, which should work well. (I say should because with some things I just can't get MYSELF motivated to work on).

Thanks so much for a different book recommendation, Ecki. Very helpful to other readers. ABA is an effective method for some teaching for some children and their parents.

I hope you can find some relief from your frustration via working on those things that YOU CHOOSE.

Thanks for the review... I saw this book in the bookstore a while back and meant to look into it, glad now that I didn't buy it :).

Thank you, Danette - hope you won't regret opening the window for me to continue on this post. I thought I was pretty reasonable for recommending why NOT to purchase this book. Still, borrowing it from the local library costs you no more investment than your time.

But time is valuable, too. And if I pick-up a book like this and spend the time to read it, I'm gonna get a post out of it! An honest post. Just like the reviews of treatment techniques I do, I seek to inform. To allow parents make informed decisions on how to use their resources. Their money and time.

Honestly, I doubted my review would influence anyone, but apparently the sisterhood of mothers-with-children-with-autism is more mother-bearish of their own kind than I knew.

Another mommy-blogger took on poor Functional Mom's book reputation with a humorous but weak declaration of love for FM's book just after I posted this. I won't mention any names but her initials are mommaontheedgeofautism.

The Weaver

  • My Life is but a weaving Between my Lord and me; I cannot choose the colors He worketh steadily.

Oft times He weaveth sorrow And I, in foolish pride, Forget He sees the upper, And I the under side.

Not til the loom is silent And the shuttles cease to fly, Shall God unroll the canvas And explain the reason why.

The dark threads are as needful In the Weaver's skillful hand, As the threads of gold and silver In the pattern He has planned.

He knows, He loves, He cares, Nothing this truth can dim. He gives His very best to those Who chose to walk with Him.
